Newsgroups don't actually carry any news: they are unmoderated discussion forums, open to anyone with internet access. There are three covering transgender issues:
Beware! These newsgroups are unmoderated, and open to all. So there is a lot of flaming, abuse, and no privacy -- anything you post can be read by anyone on the 'net. Some very nice and helpful people participate in these newsgroups, but because of the lack of privacy and the amount of flaming, many people find the newsgroups next-to-useless.
The World-Wide Web is huge, and there are lots of transgender resources out there. Rather than try to keep a comprehensive list, here are some UK sites, a few significant overseas ones, and some pointers to where you can find others.
Transgender-UK is a self-help network for all transgendered individuals within England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. A discussion room has been added at http://www.transgender.freeserve.co.uk/tg/chat.html
This is intended as a place where issues affecting the lives of transgendered people can be discussed in an empathic environment.The web-mistress Rebecca Dittman says "It is open to all visitors to the site 24/7 assuming there are two or more of you present! I will visit as I am able but definitely between 20:00 and 21:00hrs. GMT each Sunday. I hope that I will catch up with some of you there.
Mermaids. A support group for children and adolescents with Gender Identity Problems, their families, friends, carers, professionals etc. It is aimed at helping those up to age 19 years.
The Gender Trust is a UK charity that supports transsexuals. It has a great web-site!
Press for Change is a lobbying group working to improve the legal status of transsexuals in the UK. Their website includes lots of useful information for TSs.
The Northern Concord is a Manchester-based support group for all transgendered people.
The Plaid is a Scottish transgender page, with lots of useful links.
Anne Vitale's site has lots of information on Transsexual issues, with particularly good data on surgery and hormones.
The HBIGDA Standards of Care are a set of guidelines observed by most of those providing medical care for Transsexuals.
The ICTLEP Standards of Care are an alternative, more client-centred, set of guidelines.
The Hormone FAQ is an invaluable resource for transsexuals undergoing hormone therapy.
The Transgender Ring is a good place to start. It's a sort of a random list of Transgender web-sites.
FTM International is a great resource for female-to-male transvestites and transsexuals.
Julie Waters' Gender issues page has lots of a useful links.
The Australasian Good Tranny Guide is a very nicely constructed site, with a lot of useful information for TSs. It's written for the folks down under, but much of it is of wider relevance.
Yahoo is a sort of catalogue of web pages, and has a great Transgender section. Mostly American, though :(
AltaVista is a very powerful search engine. Use it to find whatever you want!
